Up for discussion and consensus is the site location. Autonomous and independent scouting is encouraged. A Spring Scout Rendezvous will be announced where scouts and event organizers will convene and consent on a site:
Site scouting will continue until mid-May, at which point scouts and other organizers will rendezvous, report-back their scouting recon, and come to a consensus regarding a site location (though we encourage and intend to foster the spread of this event beyond the region that initially spawned it, Southwest Colorado has once again been isolated as the event location region simply because no other communities stepped up with a solid and dedicated proposal to organize and host the event in their own area). We are also planning on choosing a secondary, back-up site location as a contingency plan for various potential scenarios. Some considerations to take into account while scouting include adequate parking and camping space, access to a water source, trees for climbing trainings, etc. (email us for more info).
Contact feralfutures@riseup.net to provide input and/or get involved with scouting and site selection processes.

Scouting considerations:
• National Forest land
(unless we get a private land offer we just can't refuse!) • Roads accessible to non-4WD vehicles and large vehicles like busses
• Parking adequate for 50-100 vehicles, where all four tires can get
off the road
• Adequate gathering/camping space (the more spread out, the better!)
• Water! (Springs? Filtration? Haul it in?)
• Preferably large trees (like Ponderosa Pine) for climbing trainings
(We are open to other suggestions/considerations…)

For the 2012 gathering, A location I immediately thought of is the Alta Lakes area, which fits all of the considerations accept possibly the large trees, though I'll bet many are big enough.

Aside from some tree climb trainers committing to coming to Wild Roots Feral Futures, the current drought and high fire danger is just one more reason I am advocating for the selection of an old-growth Ponderosa Pine forest site, where the indigenous fire ecology is still more or less intact. Those stands with the large, spread out Ponderosa with no lower branches and little "ladder fuel" growing beneath them are, along with their fire-resistant bark, very resilient to forest fires, and the outbreak of a human-created fire is less likely to occur in such a forest. The best such site is the one we've used in the past, which is unfortunately not far from the Little Sands fire in Southern Colorado. With any luck, the fire will be contained soon. But we need rain, and we need it badly.

So here's the inside word regarding site location scouting: we have selected a site location! Stay tuned for site location & directions announcement in the coming days!
The site we have selected for this year is *within* the Weminuche Wilderness, and unlike previous years, there will be *no* car camping. There's a pay campground near the trailhead so we're hoping to utilize donation money to reserve the spot closest to the trailhead, which will then serve as our welcoming/info area. There's plenty of parking and folx can easily get away with crashing in their vehicles, but what we mean about no car camping is you can't set up camp, pitch tents, make fires, etc., where the cars are parked, as you could in previous years, unless you wish to pay for a site in the nearby campground, which would pretty much defeat the entire purpose of being there.
The base camp is a three to four mile hike, but it's easy and relatively flat compared to that death hill from years past. There's a river and large old-growth ponderosa pine for tree climbing trainings! It's a beautiful site and you won't be disappointed.
There are many reasons we chose this site over the past site, which we'll talk about in our upcoming post releasing the site location info and directions. We'll also talk about it more on the ground and in the woods. The scout council is confident in this decision.

Seeking feedback regarding when & where to meet up for 2013 Scout Council. We usually follow Earth, Lunar, Solar, and/or Celestial cycles. There's a "Dance of the Planets" alignment coming up at the end of May, and the New Moons in on June 8th. I'd say the New Moon should be our last opportunity for council, but I'm in favor of the planetary alignment the night of Friday the 31st. Also, where? A site from years past? Piedra?

Is there a site chosen? Why so remote? Sw Colorado can only be accessed by car and some of us choose not to drive!

Scouting is complete, and we'll be announcing the site location in the coming days! Southwest Colorado was chosen because that's where the event was founded, and that's where the organizers live. That said, we've always encouraged WRFF to spread out to other bioregions, and there's something happening in Idaho this Fall, and folks in both Cascadia and the Great Lakes region also looking to organize a WRFF in their respective areas.
