So we've been having discussions about the pitfalls of "safer space" that lead to little more than an avoidance of any and all possibly triggering subject matter, in favor of the cultivation of a brave space where we feel comfortable being vulnerable with one another, and processing triggers when and if they occur.
This is a thread for the collection and discussion of resources regarding critiques of safe(r) space, discussions about accountable/brave space, etc. Please contribute! Here's a few to get things going:
"From Safe Spaces to Brave Spaces: A New Way to Frame Dialogue Around Diversity and Social Justice" Brian Arao and Kristi Clemens) www.styluspub.com/resrcs/chapters/1579229743_otherchap.pdf
"Brave Space: A community space where different points on a journey of learning and growing are acknowledged. Community members engage in critical dialogue through conscious questioning and active listening. While all are expected to make their best effort to be respectful, there is an understanding that some one may say something that result in unintentional offense and hurt feelings for those around. A primary assumption of Brave Space is that everyone speaks with the positive intent of seeking greater knowledge and understanding." geneq.berkeley.edu/sites/default/files/Brave%20Space%20Guidelines.pdf
"Kristi Lonardo Clemens and Brian Arao introduced me to the concept of Brave Space. This transformed my aims in creating a learning environment around diversity and social justice. Rather than aspiring to create a space where everyone feels safe, I now aspire to create an environment where individuals are supported in being brave. To be brave means being vulnerable, being authentic, and speaking our truth even when we aren’t sure it is our truth or even when it might reveal our own oppressive socialization AND being open to others bravely sharing their experiences of us and holding us accountable so that we all may learn and grow." www.keithedwards.com/2013/02/12/the-trouble-with-ground-rules-and-safe-space/
